How to Improve Your Life: 7 Tips from Brian Tracy

Why is a leadership lens good for success in both our personal and professional lives? I believe the answer lies in our language and how we speak about our lives. We often talk about leading our lives, with a reference to leadership at the heart of that saying. Therefore, I help people use a leadership lens to increase their success, happiness, life satisfaction and more.

Today I want to share tips from Brian Tracy’s article, “7 Leadership Qualities of All Great Leaders” and help you apply them in leading your life better, personally or professionally. Whether you are dealing with a challenge (such as workplace issues, feeling empty, facing failure, friendship frictions, or career pressure) or looking to achieve something (such as hitting work or life goals, finding purpose or greater peace and happiness), I want to use these tips to help you apply a leadership lens to your life. (If you want to read the original article, you can find it here: https://snip.ly/me7z5v.)

“1. Vision: GREAT LEADERS have a clear, exciting idea of where they are going and what they are trying to accomplish.”

Whether you are going for personal or professional success, it is important to have this vision. In my video, “Three-Step Success Plan for Improved Health, Wealth & Relationships” (https://snip.ly/0yw53p), I help people achieve this vision through my first step which is to create a Dream Blueprint. A great way to build a Dream Blueprint is through a tool called a vision board. Learn more about making a vision board here: https://snip.ly/xhcgwk.

“2. Courage: Among the 7 LEADERSHIP qualities, courage is the most identifiable outward trait.”

There are plenty of opportunities for courage. In our personal lives, it might be that it’s time to get to the doctor to find out what they have to say about our health, or talking to a loved one about a tension between us. Professionally, it might be sharing in front of the team or going for a promotion. Two great resources for this are Brave, Not Perfect (https://snip.ly/945wdt) from Reshma Saujani and Brené Brown’s work on vulnerability, such as her TED Talk “The Power of vulnerability” (https://snip.ly/th3kfe).

“3. Integrity: The main value that almost all executives agree upon for their company is integrity.”

One of the things that I think can be really tough to do but equally empowering is the integrity to be true to yourself. That’s why I share with people my 3B’s: Be You, Be Unpredictable and Just Be. We are meant to be our unique selves in the world, and the world needs what we have to offer. No matter how small our gift might seem, it is meant to be shared. (You can see me talk about them here: https://snip.ly/8c3wq9.)

“4. Humility: GREAT LEADERS are those who are strong and decisive but also humble.”

People who are leading their own lives well have a strong sense of what they want their life to look like (see #1). They also support themselves through self-love and self-care. In all of that however, the people that seem to be most at peace do so in a humble way. “Adopting a more humble mindset increases our overall psychological wellbeing,” and there are also links between humility and our ability to learn. (https://snip.ly/w54658)

“5. Strategic Planning: GREAT LEADERS are outstanding at strategic planning. They have the ability to look ahead, to anticipate with some accuracy where the industry and the markets are going."

This connects again to the Three-Step Success Plan I referenced in #1. (You can see me talke about the Plan here: https://snip.ly/idfdro.) The Dream Blueprint step helps you have a great vision of what you want to create in your life. It also helps you anticipate and strategize through creating a One Thing. That One Thing is something you most need to focus on at present, the most important item, to help your Dream Blueprint become a reality.

"6. Focus: The ability of a leader to make sure that everyone is focused and concentrated on the most valuable use of their time is essential to excellent performance."

Here again, the Three-Step Success Plan helps you do this (https://snip.ly/idfdro). The third step is your Power Hour. This is where you give yourself time each day, usually the first hour of the day is ideal, to work on your dreams and goals. You take your One Thing that was created out of your Dream Blueprint and you take action on that in your Power Hour. By nature of the One Thing, you have picked something that is important and impactful. By naming it and executing it in your Power Hour, you make sure you are focused and executing on the best use of your time to make your dream life a reality.

"7. Cooperation: LEADERSHIP is the ability to get people to work for you because they want to."

In the focus on you and your personal life, this relates to your ability to get yourself to work for your dreams and goals, your Dream Blueprint. You help yourself connect to the want to, the reasons you want to achieve your Dream Blueprint. The work from #1 will help you with this, (https://snip.ly/xhcgwk). I also sometimes talk about having SuperFriends that help you on your journey. (For more on this, see https://snip.ly/jiclu9.) SuperFriends fit under this Cooperation tip. In any case, under Cooperation, you nurture your self-love and yourself so that you get the most out of you and your life.
