Leadership Lessons for Life: Keep Your Legs Moving

Have you ever watched football and heard the statement, “Keep your legs moving?” You probably have if you are a football fan, and/or you very likely will if you watch the upcoming Super Bowl. I think it is a great analogy for life.

Let’s think about it first as it applies to offensive players, like running backs and wide receivers especially. From the perspective of a football fan, here is what comes to mind for me about the idea of keeping your legs moving:

  1. It is a way to keep from being tackled and/or losing yards

  2. It is a way of initiating contact, facing defenders head on and driving through them

  3. It is a way to try to pick up as much yardage as possible, maybe even running out of the tackle

  4. It is a way to keep moving forward

  5. It is a way to take advantage of an opportunity if it appears

Let’s put those in a more general life situation.

It is a way to keep from being tackled and/or losing yards

If you keep moving forward towards your dreams and goals, you might not be stopped by obstacles or lose ground.

It is a way of initiating contact, facing defenders head on and driving through them

If you face your challenges head on, hitting them first and not waiting for them to hit you, you might drive right past them.

It is a way to try to pick up as much yardage as possible, maybe even running out of the tackle

If you lean into your challenges, you will maximize your forward progress and might avoid being stopped by your challenges altogether.

It is a way to keep moving forward

If you keep putting effort towards your Dream Blueprint, your vision for your life, you will likely keep your progress going forward. You make yourself much harder to tackle if your legs are moving.

It is a way to take advantage of an opportunity if it appears

If you keep taking strides towards your Dream Blueprint (vision), you will be better poised to take advantage of any opportunities that may present to you. You never know when an opportunity may appear and you want to take the steps to be able to take advantage of it.

Now let’s think about it as it applies to defensive players. In this case, keeping your legs moving brings up:

  1. It is a way to keep better control of your body

  2. It gives you better control as you try to tackle your opponent

  3. It gives you more power and quicker movement

  4. It is more difficult to get knocked down

  5. It is more challenging for people to get around or over you

Let’s talk about how these apply to your life.

It is a way to keep better control of your body

You are at an advantage in life if you are in touch with, and in command of, how you move through life.

It gives you better control as you try to tackle your opponent

As you keep moving towards your goals, you will be better able to create the life you want for yourself.

It gives you more power and quicker movement

If you keep taking strides towards creating the life you want, you will have more momentum and leverage to face challenges and achieve your goals.

It is more difficult to get thrown off your feet

Taking continued steps towards the life you dream of makes it less likely you get knocked down, and less likely you stay down when you do.

It is more challenging for people to get around or over you.

Keeping up your forward momentum makes it harder for your goals and dreams to escape your grasp.

So the key here is to keep taking steps toward your Dream Blueprint, your vision for your life. Take what steps you can when you can. When obstacles come, lean into them and keep driving forward. Don’t wait for things to catch up to you, take initiative and face your challenges head on.

Here is my success framework which includes creating a Dream Blueprint.

"Take Command of Your Life: Build Your Shield!" Overcome being stuck and not knowing how to reach your dreams. 1. Create your #DreamBlueprint (vision)

2. Know your #Why

3. Pick your #OneThing (most important focus at the moment) & #Goals

4. Select your #PowerHour & #SuperFriends (your daily time to do the work and the crew that supports you)

5. Do your #SelfCare365 (daily care and love for yourself)
